The Car Industry Is Not Protected From Following Fads
The automotive industry is equally as much susceptible to the vagaries of fads and trends as any other. If you analyze car culture since the launch of the new millenium, you will find a number of interesting changes have taken place. If you took a test drive, back in 2002, of a plain-Jane Nissan Altima, you were probably surprised at the speed being greater than expected.
The advent of the 240 horsepower engine ushered in speeds considerably higher than what the 90′s had made us accustomed to. It wouldn’t quit there either, given that today the Volkswagen Passat, a family car, comes with 280 horsepower under the bonnet. For around $30,000 you can get yourself a little Mitsubishi that will embarass a Camaro with its performance. Packing a mean 500 horsepower does not elevate a car such as the Dodge Viper to beyond ordinary today. You’ll be hard-pressed today to find a car that was under-powered. It appears to be as though bigger is thought to be better with cars, because every new release is bigger than the previous one. Today’s Honda Civics tend to be bigger than the older Accords, and the new Toyota Rav4 is longer than its precursor by all of 14 inches.
An automobile that is definitely the same or less than before is not really acceptable, it seems, if you have to pay more for it. If they’re going to have to pay for it, they want their automobiles bigger and better. Bigger, regrettably, comes packaged with heavier, however the car makers are not going to stop because of that, as long as consumers keep buying. The American community wish to spend less money on gasoline, but it seems they won’t tolerate going slower in the process. Having to pay more to keep the privilege of speed is preferable, and that’s why there is such a long line of people waiting for their hybrid, the Toyota Prius. Even though Corollas stand without a buyer in sight in the same dealer’s showroom. To keep up to date, all automakers are bringing hybrids to the markets, even those like Nissan Altima, which is using a system developed by Toyota, a competitor.
The mundane design of the 90s is finished, as consumers want cars with personality. Power steering, automatic windows, airbags and powerful sound systems being standard features are now par for the course. That’s most likely the reason behind the standard price of $28,000 for that new car you want. The SUV at this point appears to be bought by foolish people, so perhaps we are going back to the days when a car was a car. Maybe it was a trend that had its day, given that the worst-hit in terms of sales are the bigger SUVs. Wonderful are the sales of little cars, even the Neon and Sentra, while the Ford Explorer and Expedition are receiving very few sales.
Vehicle companies aren’t able to stand still, but someday they need to give up needing to be so fast, and also so big. Hybrids are the new idea, and it’s likely to be interesting to follow them over the longer term. Ten years from today we can take a glance back at all the crazy stuff that took place between now and then.
