Electrical wiring jobs require several tools, which are actually not that costly. Those who want to do a bit of complicated electrician work should invest in quality electrician tools.
Continuity tester. This is a small battery powered tester that comes at a cheap price. You use it to determine whether the wiring installation is broken. It detects breaks in the continuity of the circuits.
Multi-meter. This device also checks for continuity, but it is more versatile than a simple continuity tester, as a multi-meter can also do voltage checks. Skilled electricians may be able to use the device in a jiffy, but beginners should read the manual. Generally, a multi-meter is like an ohm meter, volt meter and continuity tester combined.
Circuit tester. This is a device that is easy to use. It is simply plugged into a power outlet. What it does is that it tells you whether the circuit is properly grounded or not.
Pliers. There are different types of pliers, from mini pliers to long nose pliers. Lineman pliers are best used for cutting or twisting thick wires or cables. Long-nose pliers are used for cutting off wires or bending wire ends.
Screwdrivers. Who can forget these tools? Even homeowners have a set in their toolbox. Electricians should have the recommended set of screwdrivers for reasons you should already understand. Of course, in the line of work you do, you need those with insulated grips.
Voltage tester. The name describes the use of the tool. It checks whether or not the wires are hot. When using these devices, make sure to touch only the insulated probes. You do the test by holding one probe next to the wire you think is hot and holding the other probe next to the grounding wire. You know the circuit is live when the light indicator glows.
Wire stripper. Electrical wires generally are protected by rubber or plastic insulation to protect the bare wires from each other and to prevent people from getting electrocuted. Wire strippers come in handy when you need to link wires or connect wires to devices. In these applications, you have to remove the rubber or plastic sheaths. Of course, you have to make sure the power is off. The right wire stripper cuts through the insulation without damaging the bare wire inside.
Soldering iron. This tool is commonly used in repairing broken wires and in repairing circuit boards. It is used to apply melted solder to the spot that needs repair. When the solder dries, a new connection is made. Solder is a material made of lead and tin. The mix melts at 800 degrees Celsius. In some cases, a crimper can be used to repair broken wires, instead of a solder.
Grounded wrist strap. Wrist straps protect the delicate electronics from being damaged by ESD or static electricity. A person can accumulate static charge, which the person himself would not detect. Such buildup of ESD can affect electronics. The wrist strap will protect the electronic parts from static charges.
Other tools include fish tape, electrical contact cleaner, compressed air and chip extractors.
